OPPOSITION TO CLAIM
‘Metropolitan’ Status (N.Z. Press Association) 'WELLINGTON. Mapawatu Racing Club claims to “metropolitan” status in the constitution of the Racing Conference were opposed yesterday by the Wanganui and Taranaki Jockey Clubs. The committee of inquiry into racing was told Wanganui and Taranaki both wanted to retain metropolitan status. The committee had before it suggestions that the Manawatu club should become the metropolitan club of the present Wanganui district, in which it is situated, displacing the Wanganui club, or that a new Manawatu district be created, with a consequent amalgamation of the Wanganui and Taranaki districts. Submissions yesterday from Wanganui and Taranaki favoured the status quo in the area, although Taranaki added that it had no objection to a further metropolitan district being created to cover Manawatu, provided the Taranaki district was not abolished.
