Doctor Working For Nothing
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, April 21. One member of the Kew Hospital visiting medical staff, Dr. R. K. McFarlane, visiting radiologist, is working for the Southland Hospital Board without remuneration.
Dr. McFarlane’s resignation from the visiting staff became effective last Tuesday. Dr. McFarlane’s payment by the board for his services was terminated the same day, at Dr. McFarlane’s request. Dr. McFarlane is president of the Southland branch of the B.M.A. The board, at a special meeting today accepted Dr. McFarlane’s offer to act in an honorary capacity “with gratitude” and expressed the
hope that he would find himself able to resume his position on the paid medical staff in the not too distant future. Dr. McFarlane said in his resignation, dated April 13, that he was prepared to be available for radiological consultations in emergencies if called upon. The board said that Dr. McFarlane, in an honorary capacity, would be bound by the same conditions of employment that he was bound by as a paid servant.
