Denial N.Z. Dairy Efforts Restricted

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 21. New Zealand had not been singled out in trade restrictions which prevented New Zealand exporting more dairy produce to America, the agricultural attache at the United States Embassy, Mr W. G. Loveless, said today. Any trade restrictions being maintained by the United States at present were global, he said.

Mr Loveless was commenting on criticism by the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall), who said yesterday: “It has been a longstanding regret of the New Zealand Government that the area of trade singled out by the United States for the most severe restriction should include dairy products, the ex-

port of which is so vital to the New Zealand economy.”

Mr Loveless said that in the period July 1, 1965, to February 28, 1966, the total butter imports by the United States were 507,026 pounds. Of this quantity New Zealand was the main supplier with 238,840 pounds. In the same period 1,250,750 pounds of cheddar cheese entered the United States, and New Zealand was again the principal supplier with 1,016,612 pounds.
