78CarsFall Out Of Rally (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NAIROBI. Only 10 cars out of 88 starters were left in the East African Safari motor rally as the 3000-mile event entered its closing stages yesterday. The leader was still Bert ■ Shankland, of Tanzania, driving a Peugeot 404, but Vic Preston, of Kenya, in a Ford Cortina, narrowed the gap during the night to about 50 points. Third was last year's winner, Joginder Singh, also of Kenya, driving a Volvo.

The other seven cars left in the field are two Cortinas, three Datsuns, a Mercedes and a Volkswagen. Sweden’s Erik Carlsson and his British-born wife, Pat, both knocked out of the rally, said the Safari was “the finest and toughest road rally in the world.”
