VIETNAM SERVICE
No Cut In Term (Special Crspdt. N.Z.PA.) SAIGON, April 10. The strain on the New Zealand Army’s manpower meant no reduction in the 18-month term of service in Vietnam for single men was possible at present, said the New Zealand Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre). Mr Eyre told gunners of New Zealand’s 161 Battery at their Bien Hoa base on Friday that he had asked for an examination by the Army of the 18-month term of duty. However, he promised the men he would look at the possibility of a long break away from the area at the middle of their tour in Vietnam.
The gunners had just returned from a 10-day operation after giving artillery support to Australian troops in an action against the Viet Cong, south-east of Saigon. Mr Eyre’s party included Lieutenant-General L. W. Thornton, New Zealand Chief of Defence Staff, and Mr D. S. Thompson, M.P. for Stratford.
Mr Eyre met General C. Westmoreland, United States military commander in Vietnam, before leaving for Singapore.
