Population Increase At Gisborne

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 10. A population increase of 13.8 per cent over the 1961 figures is revealed for the city of Gisborne in the third list of provisional 1966 census figures released by the Department of Statistics.

Gisborne’s population increased from 21,769 to 24,783 in the five years, although the Government Statistician. Mr J. V. T. Baker, notes that this year’s figures were affected by boundary changes. Lyttelton’s population rose from 3400 to 3495, an increase of 2.5 per cent. Wanaka, with a jump from 360 to 632, showed a more spectacular percentage increase of 75.6 and Queenstown, with 1635 persons this year against 1321 in 1961, is

up 23.8 per cent. In both cases it is noted that 1966 figures were possibly affected by an influx of visitors.
