John’s Mistake Takes Great Western Again

Bought as a yearling for 20 guineas for use as a farm hack, John’s Mistake won the Great estern Steeplechase for the second successive year on Saturday. Ihe race was the feature event on the opening day of the Riverton Racing dub s Easter meeting.

John’s Mistake was bought for her Dipton owner, Mrs J. Burgess, at the dispersal of the Glentruin Stud, Otautau. He has now won nine races, eight of them as a ’chaser, and £4342 in stakes. John's Mistake's seasoned condition was the deciding factor in the 1966 Great Western Steeplechase which he won by a clear margin from the favourite, Koral. He gave a rough displayover fences, almost falling at the third to last fence, the post and rails at the half-mile. He showed rare courage to peg back the pacemaker, Koral. racing to the last fence and win by four lengths. LOST GROUND John’s Mistake lost ground at several fences in the middle stages, but repeatedly retrieved the situation on the flat. Koral gave a grand display but with no pace on in the early running he went to the front. He was joined by Runty soon afterwards and at one stage they were almost 20 lengths clear. Koral had Runty beaten at the home turn and Runty fell at the second to last fence, leaving Kora! clear. Over the final furlong Kora! was unable to match John’s Mistake’s finish. Bayline was 25 lengths away third. Flying York emerged on

top in a fighting finish in the Riverton Cup after making almost all the running. It was a game performance as he almost fell with seven furlongs to run and was headed by Allez Vite at the half-furlong, only to regain the lead again short of the post. The second leg of the double, the Aparima Handicap, was won by Belltana. The Flying York-Belitana combination paid £53 Is. The meeting was held in fine weather on a soft track.
