DIED IN TRAINING
T h e Wingatui-trained i Friar's Birthday died of a heart attack at Riccarton on Saturday morning. The trainer, A. I. Powell, was riding Friar’s Birthday in a gallop on the outside of the course proper when the Cassock gelding faltered and fell. Mr E. H. Young’s chestnut died within a few minutes. i
Powell, who was not injured, had brought Friar’s Birthday north to run in the Dominion Handicap on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Wednesday. The gelding won the race last season. Another of his victories last season was at Invercargill. where he beat Eiffel Tower.
