Upsets In Judo Championships

WELLINGTON, April 10

Two New Zealand judo representatives failed to win titles at the tenth national judo championships in Wellington on Saturday night.

D. Delay (Auckland), a member of the national contingent to the world championships in Brazil last year and the 1965 New Zealand open individual champion, was beaten by P. Toner (Wellington Judo Academy) in the final of the middle-weight division.

McPhee, failed to reach the semi-finals in any division. Lost Title

McPhee was the 1965 North Island champion, the national shodan champion and also the New Zealand heavy-weight champion. He lost his heavyweight title to B. Hiku. of Otematata.

An up and coming Lower Hutt Y.M.C.A. brown belt, G. Roberts, took his first title when he beat M. Yarrow (Wellington Judo Academy) by half a point in the final of the open-weight division. Results:

Middle-weight.—Semi-final: D. Delay (Auckland Judo Club) beat G. Roberts (Lower Hutt Y.M.C.A.), P. Toner (Wellington Judo Academy) beat T. Croll (Lower Hutt Y.M.C.A.). Final: P. Toner beat D. Delay. Roberts beat Croll for third place. Heavy-weight.—Semi-final: K Bradford (Auckland Judo Club) beat D. McKay (Wanganui), B. Hiku (Otematata) beat C. Edwards (Can-Am-Ju). Final: B. Baku beat K. Bradford. Edwards beat McKay for third place. Open-weight.—Semi-final: M. Yarrow (Wellington Judo Academy) beat Bradford, Roberts beat Burke. Final: Roberts beat Yarrow. Burke beat Bradford for third place. Teams' Events Open.—Semi-final: Wellington Judo Academy beat Wanganui Judo Club. Lower Hutt Y.M.C.A. beat Invercargill. Final: Wellington beat Lower Hutt. Restricted Kyu (league basts). —Lower Hutt Y.M.C.A. beat Wellington Judo Academy and won the league having the highest number of points over-all.

Open Kyu.—Semi-final: Wellington Judo Academy beat Masterton Judo Club. Final: Wellington beat Lower Hutt.
