Passenger Ship Ablaze

GN.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) MIAMI (Florida), April 8. The Miami Coast Guard today reported that the 12,812-ton Norwegian passenger liner Viking Princess with 235 passengers aboard was ablaze between Cuba and Haiti.

The crew and passengers from the liner were being picked up by the German motor vessel Cap Norte, the Coast Guard said.

The ship was ablaze but still afloat. A United States Coast Guard cutter, a United States warship, a Liberian freighter and two rescue aircraft were reported to be in the area. A distress signal from the Viking Princess was monitored by the Coast Guard this morning. It said the ship’s engine room was on fire and they were preparing to abandon ship. The Coast Guard blamed difficulties in communications with the Viking Princess for

a confusion over the identity of the distressed vessel. At one time the Coast Guard was reporting that a Liberian freighter, the Navigator, which is in the area, had sunk.
