Obituary MR E. W. HASELL

The death occurred in Christchurch on Thursday of Mr Edward William Hasell, a former All Black, who was the branch manager of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., for many years.

Mr Hasell for 18 years was with the law firm of Harper, Pascoe. Buchanan and Upham before he went to the then Ward’s Breweries as an accountant. He later became branch manager of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd. During World War I Mr Hasell was with the artillery in France. In 1919 he was a member of the New Zealand Army football team which won the Queen’s Cup against all comers in Britain. The same team, on its way home to New Zealand, toured South Africa and won every match. In 1921 Mr Hasell played for Canterbury against the South Africans, a game which resulted in a 6-5 win for Canterbury. The same year Mr Hasell was selected to play for New Zealand.

A keen sportsman all his life, Mr Hasell was a golfer with a low handicap and was a member of the Christchurch Golf Club. In his later years he became a member of the Fendalton and Lincoln bowling clubs. Mr Hesell was a former president of the Midland Club. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. MR T. W. BARROW A well-known Christchurch master butcher who had been In business for more than 50 years, Mr Thomas William Barrow, died in Christchurch on Thursday, aged 89. Mr Barrow, who was born in Swindon, Wiltshire, came to New Zealand in 1905. He went into business in 1908 in Papanui road, and in 1916 moved to the shop in Armagh street which still bears his name.

Mr Barrow retired at the beginning of the Second World War, but retained an active interest in the business until about five years ago. He is survived by a son and four daughters.
