World Title Nominees Suffer Bowls Defeats

Sixteen of the 94 teams won their three matches on the first day of the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s Easter fours tournament yesterday.

Many prominent bowlers were among those to lose matches.

K. R. Smith (Christchurch), K. G. Murray (Opawa) and C. Rowe (Opawa)— all nominees for the New Zealand team to compete in the world bowling championships—were beaten, and Rowe had the uncomfortable experience of losing, 7-19, to J. Griffin (Dallington). Murray, whose side had played precise bowls to win its first two games, lost, 15-16, to W. R. Wilkinson (Hornby) in a tense match.

Wilkinson was leading, 1510, with two ends to play, but Murray gained five precious points when Wilkinson, rather unwisely, drove twice and took out only one of Murray’s six shots. Murray was two down on the head when the skips played their last two bowls. He saved one shot with his first bowl, btit was short with his second. Even then it needed a measure before Wilkinson gained his one point and the match. In the first round Murray achieved a possible when his team scored eight, all drawn against J. Simpson (St. Martins). Narrow Defeats Smith, who had as his lead R. Hayes, whom he partnered when they won the Christchurch championship paars, had narrow margins in all his games. He lost, 21-22, to T. J. Edmonds (St. Albans) and 1819 to A. Bond (Papanui). There were some prominent fours in the unbeaten

teams. N. McNab’s R.S.A. side which won the champion of champions fours, continued with its good form, and L. Newton (Dallington), who had as his No. 3 D. Stuart, the beaten finalist in the champion of champions singles, played most competently. R. Pirrie (Dallington), A. A. Bills (Christchurch W.M.C.), and R. L. Ward (Shirley) were other wellknown fours to be unbeaten.

Halswell, a small club, did exceptionally well to have two of its teams, D. Watson and H. C. Dutton, unbeaten. Lively Auckland Team One of the liveliest teams at the Morrison Avenue green, which is the headquarters for the tournament, was a visiting four from' the Auckland Workingmen’s Club, skipped by T. Warner. This very jovial side did not fare too well; its losses were quite de-cisive—33-9, 21-10, and 31-10. But obviously the team enjoyed itself hugely. Teams to win all their matches were:— F. Mathews (Sydenham), W. J. Hanger (Spreydon), D. M. Hoult (United), M. Lawson (Sydenham), G. E. Bennett (Fendalton), Newton (DaMington), Dutton (Halswell). McNab (R.S.A.), T.
