PENALTY ON RATES
Mission Seeks Remission
Penalties on rates unpaid by due date became part of the rates and would not be remitted except on proof of hardship to the council’s satisfaction, said the Clerk (Mr A. Kelly) at a meeting of the Paparua County Council.
Hardship was the only ground on which the penalty could be remitted, he said. If the council neglected to get proof, it could be questioned by the Audit Department. The council approved a financial committee recommendation to require the Institute de Notre Dame des Missions to place before the council details of its financial position to support a request for remission of the rates penalty. Cr. L. P. Manion said it was undignified to ask the mission to produce a financial statement. Payment of the rates had been missed because the clerical sister had become ill. The institute’s only income was from teaching and it had a £9OOO mortgage.
His amendment that the penalty be remitted was defeated.
