DISTANCE PROBLEM

Cliatliams’ Request

An application from the Chathams Island Rugby Club for affiliation to the Canterbury Rugby Union will be returned with the advice that the club already is a member of the Canterbury Sub-unions

The letter from the club said that it had three teams but only 30 members —the balance coming from visiting fishermen.

Also it was asked if players could be members of the injured players’ insurance fund if the club became affiliated. There was a doctor on the island, said the letter. Mr B. J. Drake said at last evening’s meeting there was one major difficulty associated with this matter. Injuries had to be notified to the union within 72 hours of the injury occurring, which would be impossible from the Chathams.

Reinstatement.— P. L. Do'g. a senior League player, who ap niied for reinstatement to Rugbv. will have his application forwarded to the New Zealand union with the committee s approval.

Amalgamation.— A formal ap plication from the Meriva’e and papanui clubs for (heir affiba t on to the Canterbury union to be d'scontinued and replaced by a new club. Merivale-Papanui. was anproved. Mr D. B. Poake said that the amalgamation appeared to be a success. "There were 200 boys at St. James Park last Saturday morning, which is a healthy sign.”

Auckland Came. — No firm reply has been received front Auckland to Canterbury’s request for a match during its northern tour, which would be a challenge if Auckland still holds the Ranfurly Shield. Auckland’s brief reply said: ■■Your letter has been referred to our match committee.” Colourful. — New colours of gold and maroon for Hagley H sh School were approved "It certainly looks like noth’ng we have had before.” said Mr I. M Willoughby "It might out shine the university soe’al team’s colours.” said Mr S R. Southall
