WIND-ASSISTED 9.8SEC Mackenzie’s Time Equals Record

1 he New Zealand quarter-mile champion, D. W. Mackenzie, equalled the provincial 100 yards record with a wind-assisted run of 9.8 sec. at St. Andrew’s College last evening.

Although not as fast as his two runs of 9.ssec in recent weeks, it was a splendid performance on a track deadened by heavy rain earlier in the dav.

The wind assistance was just above the allowable maximum at 7.7 ft. per sec. The Canterbury record is held jointly by Mackenzie a n d the national sprint champion. A. G. Steel. Mackenzie, competing for Cambridge-University, finished two clear yards ahead of the Australian Universities 100 and 220 yards champion. A. Rowe, whose time was lOsec. The Australian Universities record-holder for the 440 yards, R. Clarke, was third. ALSO 220 yd WIN Only a few minutes before the 100 yards. Mackenzie raced over the 220 yards in fine style to win handsomely tn the good time of 22.35ec. This was .6sec outside his Canterbury record and was run into a strong head wind of 9.9 ft per sec. At the finish he was three yards clear of Rowe, who was credited with 22.8 sec. Clarke was third.

i The New Zealand junior quarter-mile champion, G. McKechnie (St. Andrews), competing by invitation, showed impressive form in his specialist event. Running in the senior race he was just edged out of first place by •the Australian, F. Lancaster, whose winning time was 50.1 sec. CHALLENGE RESISTED Lancaster made his break from the 220-yard mark and was level with McKechnie, who had drawn an outside lane, as the field entered the final bend. McKechnie sprinted valiantly and was only two yards down as they came into the final straight. He closed the gap all the way to the tape but was just unable to get past. His time for second place was 50.2 sec. ; Canterbury’s high hurdler. D. Stevenson, turned on an i immaculate display in the 440 yards hurdles. In spite of the failing light and_ bitterly cold conditions, he won comfortably in 25.55ec. 1 J. Hongell .ustralian

Universities) was second, in 26.1 sec, but B. Carrigan (A.U.), who recently caused a surprise by defeating the national 120 yards hurdles champion, M. Walls, was a disappointing third. UNDER-17 RECORD A bright note to the hurdling was introduced by the Christ's College runner, D. Watson, who broke the Canterbury under-17 record in a special junior invitation event. He recorded 27sec. R. Wilson (Westonian), the holder of the 120 yards record, was second in 27.8 sec. W. Slinn (Canterbury University) produced some of his best form to win the halfmile in the excellent time of Imin 56.8 sec. R. Larkin (Australia), who ran the distance in Imin 56sec at Wellington on Saturday, faded badly at the finish after leading the field through the first lap. Slinn went ahead with about 220 yards to go, and Larkin made a desperate effort to come through again but his tiring legs would not respond. In the run to the tape. J. Power (Canterbury University), a specialist threemiler, came through to take second place by half a stride. Larkin was third. 1 Results were:— Abbreviations used are:A.U.
