Ford Enters “Bread Van” (Special Cr»p<it. N.Z.P A ) LONDON. 1 The New Zealand drivers. Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, lapped the Le Mans track in the new Ford J car at an average speed of 140.7 m.p.h. on Sunday—more than 2 m.p.h. faster than the official record. The clutchless Ford J, with a seven-litre engine developing 650 b.h.p., has only two pedals—brake and accelerator. The Anglo-American car, de signed in Britain, developed and produced in Detroit, has eliminated nuts and bolts, with parts, including the suspension, held together by a development of aircraft glue. It has been nicknamed the [“bread van" because of its [square cut-off back The car is 3001 b lighter than any comparable car. This has been achieved by using a “sandwich” construction, two sheets of light alloy with a crinkled honeycomb sheet between them replacing the body.
