READY FOR ARMY
Barrack Block At Burnham
The second three-storey barrack block to be built of permanent materials at Burnham Military Camp will be handed over this week to the [ Ministry of Works by the contractor, the Fletcher Construction Company. Ltd. It is estimated to have cost £98.000.
After Easter the building will be handed over to the Army and troops will move in.
When the contract was let' the barracks were to have! been completed by late October or early November last . year. The delay is believed: to have been caused by a' shortage of labour and the pressure of building activity in and around Christchurch. The first block at Burnham was built in 20 months at an estimated cost of £82,863 by [ the same contractor. Burnham is now the only [ military camp in New Zealand [ to have two of these struc-i tures completed. One has [ been completed at Linton camp. Work is also well on the) way with the new mess block at Burnham, which will provide accommodation for 800' troops. Originally this was estimated to cost £130,000, but at the time it was planned for use by 1000 men.
Finance for the third barrack block is expected to be approved next year. When erected, it is expected that the old war-time C and D wooden barracks at Burnham will be demolished.
