ASHBURTON SEAT
MrR. E. Buick Selected Mr R. E. Buick, of Mount Somers, chairman of the Ashburton County Council, will be the National Party candidate for the Ashburton electorate at the General Election. He was chosen at a meeting of the selection committee at Geraldine last evening. Mr Buick is 47, and has a family of four. He was born in Oamaru, and has been fanning at Mount Somers since 1944. He served with the Army for four years in the Second World War, was wounded, and gained a commission in the field. Mr Buick served on the Ashburton County Council from 1953 to 1959. was reelected in 1962. and has now been chairman for three years.
Other nominations for the candidature were Messrs N. S. Brown. G. Humm, C. C. A. McLachlan, R. L. Talbot and J. Woodhead. Mr R. G. Gerard. the present member, is to retire after 23 years’ service.
