ANZAC DAY Paparua Alters Sports Policy

Sporting bodies will be allowed by the Paparua County Council to organise events on the afternoon of Anzac Day if profits are given to the Returned Services’ Association or associated charitable purposes.

This decision was reached by the committee at its meeting last night, when the chairman (Mr R. J. Roberts) asked for direction on policy for organised activities in the county on Anzac Day.

He said the council’s policy had been not to allow profitmaking activities, such as the speedway and go-kart racing, or competition games in participant sports. Cr. A. Y. Shuker said, as one of the younger generation, he would like to see organised events on the afternoon of Anzac Day. There was nothing for young people to do, and this was enticing them into mischief. If these events made a profit, and the council should require balance-sheets, the profit should be given to something connected with the R.S.A. or similar charities. “Why allow pictures and not the speedwav on Anzac Day after 2 n.m.?" asked Cr Shuker. “We should be broad-minded and provide entertainment. It looks as though it is the will of the people that the form of Anzac Dav should be changed.”

Cr. H. W. Bennett said the Hcrnby town committee recommended that the Hornby Theatre he allowed to screen f"ms from 2 p.m. on Anzac Dav. It had made th’s decision mainlv to benefit the chi'dren. and in an effort to relieve mothers. Cr. R. S. Mayer said he was not against Anzac Dav or Sunday sport, hut the move should come from the R.S A. Until the R S.A. made up its mind, the council should adhere to its nrevious policy.

Cr. Shuker’s motion to allow Anzac Day events after 2 p.m. provided profits are distributed was seconded by Cr. J. U. Barclay, and carried by six votes to three.

Permission was granted to Mr W. Craven, of the Kosy Theatre, Hornby, to show films on Anzac Day, screenings not to begin before 2 P.m.
