Nkrumah
Sir,—The Boys’ Brigade in Ghana was never used for Nkrumahist indoctrination, but continued to operate as a Christian youth organisation at least until 1963. The Ghana Government sponsored the formation of a new youth organisation in 1960, the Ghana Young Pioneers, which was designed to propagate Nkrumahism. After 1962 Western-oriented youth organisations found life increasingly difficult, since Ghana Government money, funds from the Kwame Nkrumah Trust Fund (the Ghana equivalent of the Golden Kiwi), etc., were channelled exclusively to the Young Pioneers, and parents and schools were under some pressure to have their children belong to the Young Pioneers. Another government - sponsored organisation, the Builders’ Brigade (later renamed Workers' Brigade) was established in 1960 with the aim of providing basic agricultural training for unemployed workers, and this was also used for political ends. It appears, therefore, that Dr. Carnegie was confusing the Boys’ Brigade with one of these other organisations.— Yours, etc.. R. N. KENNAWAY. April 3, 1966.
