N.Z. HELP FOR ASIA

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 24. New Zealand would continue to give all the help it could to the E.CA.F.E. region, the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) said yesterday in New Delhi. New Zealand increasingly felt a sense of involvement with the region, Mr Marshall told the twenty-second session & E.CJLF.E.

This was a significant development for a country which in the past had thought in terms of Europe. New Zealand recognised that its future was bound up with the development of Asia and the Far East, which from New Zealand’s point of view were its northern neighbours. Although the region’s problems were enormous and progress was often not as rapid as could be wished, great schemes were still going ahead which would produce great results—for example, the Asian Development Bank.

Mr Marshall said jthe New Zealand Government felt cer-

tain the bank would be an important instrument for promoting economic co-operation and development in the region, and was therefore glad to contribute to its capital, even though it would not be a borrower from the bank. Action was needed in the Kennedy Round of GA.T.T, Mr Marshall said. The failure of the rich industrialised nations to adopt a mwe liberal policy toward trade in agricultural goods was placing unnecessary restrictions on an important sector of International trade, be said.
