SHUNTING WORK
‘Danger Not Realised’ (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 24. More than 50 per cent of the employees in the Westfield marshalling yard were not familiar with a shunting manual issued by the Government and had been given no instruction, Ronald Douglas Alterator, a main line shunter, said today at an inquest into the death of Wiremu Riki Ngawharau, aged 29, a railway traffic assistant.
The Auckland District Coroner (Mr A. D. Copeland) found that Ngawharau died on November 16, 1965, of multiple injuries suffered when he was run over by a railway waggon at the Westfield marshalling yard. In view of the evidence before him the incident should be placed before the Railways Department, the Coroner said.
