Rangiora-born Woman Appointed Professor
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 24. The University of Otago council has appointed Dr. Margaret Dalziel, reader in English, a personal professor in the department of English. An additional chair like this in a department is given as a mark of personal distinction. Dr. Dalziel was born at Rangiora and attended Canterbury University College, where she graduated M.A. with first-class honours in English in 1936. In 1938 she was awarded a Sir William Hartley scholarship and went to the University of Oxford, obtaining a First in Greats in 1941—a rare distinction. On returning to New Zealand riie lectured in English at Canterbury University College and also taught at St. Margaret’s College, Christchurch. From 1944 to 1949 she was principal of St Hilda’s Collegiate School, Dunedin. She then returned to Oxford and was awarded the D.Phil. degree in 1952. Dr. Dalziel was appointed lecturer in English at the University of Otago, in 1953, senior lecturer in 1957, and reader in 1960. Her main interest is in the field of eighteenth and nine-
teenth century popular fiction. She writes regularly in “Landfall” on literary and educational topics.
