$250,000 GOLF TOURNAMENT
(-V.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright* NEW YORK. Prize money of up to a quarter of a million dollars is planned for the world’s richest golf tournament. The tournament, named the Westchester Classic, would begin on August 23-27 next year at the Westchester Country
Club In New York, United Press' International reported. The richest tourney at pre. sent is the 200,000-dollar Carling open. For the last four years, Westchester Country Club has been the site of the Thunderbird Classic. That tournament’s sponsors have moved their event this year to New Jersey, incurring the wrath of some New York golf officials. Mr William M. Jennings, president of the United Hospital Building Fund of Port Chester, New York, which will sponsor the new tournament, said more than 250,000 dollars will go to the P.G.A., of which more than 200,000 dollars will he guaranteed to the competing golfers. The remaining 50,000 dollars will be used by the P.GA. as it sees fit Part of the money may go into the purse, Mr Jennings said.
