CHEATING ALLEGED
Japanese Defended
f.V.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) HONG KONG. The Far East golf circuit co-ordinating committee in Hong Kong is investigating allegations of cheating by Japanese players. Its spokesman, Mr K. Hall, said all Australian and British professionals were being asked to attend “because the allegations were damaging to the circuit.”
The allegations were contained in an article in the Australian-managed newspaper, the “Star.” It quoted unnamed Australian and British players as saying that the Japanese had broken the rules of golf by seeking and giving advice to each other when not playing together, and by kicking balls out of the rough and bad lies.
Of the 36 Japanese golfers playing in the Hong Kong open tournament who were approached by reporters, ajl smiled and refused to comment on the charges. But overseas golfers immediately came to their defence.
Peter Thomson (Australia): The Japanese have been honest and fair—outstandingly so. The allegations look like sour grapes on the part of somebody who has not done so well.
Harold Henning ”(South Africa): The allegations are rubbish.
Frank Phillips (Australia): Such talk is slanderous. Geoff Paralow (Australia): Wrong. Really stupid and bad.
