ELLESMERE LEVEL

Foot Drop Favoured

The Canterbury Progress League is in favour of dropping the level of Lake Ellesmere by about a foot to enable an estimated 27,000 acres of land to be brought into production. A member of the irrigation, land development, and forestry committee of the league, Mr H. H. Deans, said last night that the estimated value of production from the reclaimed land would earn £500,000 in overseas exchange. Mr Deans said the committee urged the establishment of a controlled outlet through a permanent channel or more frequent opening to the sea by the North Canterbury Catchment Board, with the costs to be shared by all concerned aided by Government subsidy. The committee considered that the level of the lake could be retained at about 2ft 6in in winter and 2ft in summer, leaving about 40.000 acres of water. This level would be of no fundamental disadvantage to any of the three main interested bodies —the commercial fishermen, the lake settlers and the Acclimatisation Society—and of apparent benefit to all.
