Fishing By Helicopter Was Pilot’s Idea
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Jan. 20. An Auckland pilot Mr B. Barrow, who is a director of Marine Helicopters, Ltd., which plans to catch fish by helicopter, got the idea when between spells of aerial spraying he dabbled in commercial fishing from his 19ft 6in planing hull plywood boat. Weather or the distance involved spoilt his chances of getting into his boat fish he spotted from his Tiger Moth. He said today that he began thinking about a marine helicopter and found they were available. The result was the
formation of the company and arrival of a Hughes helicopter at an Auckland wharf. Asked how it could pay to use a helicopter to catch fish when even a small helicopter cost about £5O a flying hour to run Mr Barrow said that the machine cost big money only when it was actually flying. A great amount of work could be packed into an hour's flying, which might be spread over a day. The firm plans to lay long lines and to use nets which would be winched in from the shore.
