Waipuna Shearing Claim Described As “Wild”
(N.Z. Press Association)
GREYMOUTH. Jan. 20. The Kereru tally of 2860 sheep sheared in nine hours was an “admirable record — for lambs," said the manager of the Waipuna station, Mr George Ferguson, tonight Mr Ferguson was replying to a Christchurch man's criticism that the New Zealand record claimed by a six-man shearing gang at Waipuna, near Greymouth, on Wednesday was a ‘"wild” one. The Waipuna gang claimed a New Zealand record for shearing 2488 two to three-year-old Romney ewes in nine hours, but yesterday Mr Neville Hooper, of Hornby, challenged the claim. He said he had been a member of a six-man gang that sheared 2860 Romney lambs at Kereru station, Hawke’s Bay, in 1961.
The records for shearing Romney lambs and two to three-year-old Romney ewes could not be compared, said Mr Ferguson. For example, store lambs would average between 40 and 501 b live weight, while the sheep sheared at Waipuna averaged between 120 and 14Olb, he said.
Mr Ferguson appealed to the Wool Board to keep an official tally of records because shearing competitions stimulated interest in the industry.
