Royal Sheen Fancied For Hastings

"The Press" Special Service

WELLINGTON. Bandon and Royal Sheen, first and second in the Manawatu Cup, will probably meet again and will clash with the Manawatu Challenge Stakes winner, Starlit, in the Hastings Gold Cup tomorrow. Bandon, however, could miss the first leg of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double and be reserved for a later meeting. Starlit (by Star Kingdom) had little trouble winning a mile and her trainer, K. Couper, is confident that she will not be disgraced in the Gold Cup. Devastation will be the popular fancy for the Stewards’ Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. His main rivals are expected to be Dalvui and the improving Grazioso and Bywon. If the weather stays fine the track will be fast. Suspended (N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. Two jockeys, J. D. Pankhurst and N. T. Cowles, were suspended until 5 p.m. tomorrow as a result of inquiries at Washdyke yesterday. Pankhurst, the rider of Golden Thistle in the Smithfield Improvers’ Handicap, was charged with interference which caused the fall of Danny Kaye near the furlong. The judicial committee found the charge proved after evidence had shown that Pankhurst had taken the line of Danny Kaye. Cowles, the rider of Golden Vanity in the St. Andrew’s Highweight, was suspended after it was found that he had taken the line of Prince Callan (K. W. Quayle) outside the furlong. E. A. Winsloe, the Gore trainer of Flying Trix, a late scratching for the President’s Handicap, told the judicial committee that he had not noted that the race order had been changed from the club’s original programme. He arrived at the course under the imDression that the President’s Handicap was the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

The club’s secretary, Mr L. R. Oliff. confirmed that the race order had been changed after acceptances were taken on Tuesday night. Because of this, the committee fined Winsloe the minimum of £5 under the Rules of Racing.
