CONVICTION IN AUST.

Immigrant Disqualified

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Dec. 30.

Lyel Arthur Tice, aged 47, a salesman, was convicted and remanded in custody for a week when he appeared before Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M. today on a charge of being a prohibited immigrant. He pleaded guilty. Mr G. D. Speight, for the Department of Labour, said that in 1958 Tice was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in Australia for false pretences. The sentence made him a prohibited immigrant.

Mr Speight asked for the remand so that formalities for Tice to be returned to Australia could be completed.

In Court, Tice said: ‘They advertised a position in New Zealand so 1 came over. There was nothing in the immigration papers to indicate the offence.”
