Traffic At Airport Thought Record
Christmas traffic at Christchurch Airport is thought by the manager of the airport (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) to have been a record.
Mr Jamieson said yesterday that figures were not yet available, but a fair indication of how busy the airport had been could be obtained from the use made of the parking lot About 7000 cars had used the area in the five days.
The flow of traffic through the terminal building during the Christmas period had been th 3 smoothest he had experienced, he said. However, that did not take into account delays the airlines had suffered because of the weather, but only the handling of passengers. The introduction of jet traffic had made it more apparent that there was a need to expedite the planned extension of the international passenger area.
Tenders for the extensions to the international wing would probably be called in February. Travellers’ movements through the domestic area of the terminal building had shown that the planned date for extensions of that area.
12 months, might have to be moved forward. The need for e«riier work on those extensions had become more apparent with increased domestic peaks and increased frequencies of flights, he said.
