Claims During Year
A record amount of £1,313,643 was claimed by writs filed in the Supreme Court at Christchurch during the year. There were 239 writs filed, compared with 219 claiming £584,000 last year.
In 38 civil actions heard during the year £64,115 was claimed, plaintiffs recovering £35,494. Seven were taken before juries and 31 were heard before the judge alone. There were 57 adjudications in bankruptcy, two more than in
There were 275 petitions for divorce filed, six more than last year. Decrees nisi were granted in 244 cases, the orders subsequently being made absolute in 213 cases. More than twice as many persons were convicted by juries this year—72 compared with 34 last year. Juries found 21 persons not guility. Fees and fines collected from all sources totalled £15,899, about £3OOO more than last year. There were 117 appeals from the Magistrate’s Court against convictions and sentence.
