For one set the left-handed Canterbury junior W. J. Mitchell threatened to upset the Auckland veteran. J. E. Robson. during the second round of the men’s singles at the Auckland tennis championships yesterday. Mitchell took the first set from Robson, the second seed, 6-1 but his game deteriorated as Robson’s steady attack 'took him to a 1-6, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2 victory.
| In the first round matches the most impressive player was B. F. Fairlie who gained ) a straight sets win against jJ. Fergusson. 6-4, 6-2, 9-7. Three seeded players— Robson K. H. Wong and J. H. Lockington—have played and won their second round matches.
In the women’s singles, an Australian player Miss K. Rosser, beat Miss K. Peni, 6-2, S-6, but a second Australian. Miss M Kynaston, lost to Mrs F. Lobb, 1-6. 6-1, 5-7.
