Boys’ Brigade

Members

One hundred and thirtyseven members of the Boys’ Brigade from Christchurch. Ashburton, and Kaiapoi will leave Christchurch today by train for the annual summer camp at Waipara of the Canterbury Battalion. Most of the 25 officers arrived at the camp yesterday afternoon to make prepara- ' tions.

The commanding officer is Mr W. S. Collins, captain of the 18th Christchurch Company, and the adjutant is Mr S. Hay. The chaplain is the Rev. G. R. Trebilco, chaplain to the 14th Christchurch Company. The captain of this company', Mr P. Beaumont, is the programme officer. First-aid is being provided by the St. John Ambulance Brigade. The programme has been divided into four sections for first-year campers, second-year campers, third-year campers, and seniors—boys over 15 years. Activities include obstacle courses, swimming, billy cooking, an assault course, gravity chariots, boomerang] throwing, softball, setting up' a camp and spending a night away from the main camp, bridge and raft building, an all-night traverse and rescue exercise, and expedition train-: ing and testing for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. Last Friday a dam was built in the Waipara river to provide suitable swimming for those attending. Visitors’ day will be on Saturday, January 1. Many parents and visitors usually attend to see the special dis-] plays and activities provided’ throughout the day. After the camp, which will end on January 3, there will; be a three-day senior adven-. ture camp. Boys attending this! will be required to spend the, three days alone in groups of three in open high country.
