Slightly Smaller Acreage

Potatoes grown on contract with the Potato Board this season have declined from 13,223 acres last season to 12,881 acres.

The North Island acreage has risen from 2413 to 3021, but in the South Island it has dropped from 10,810 to 9860. The acreages for the various districts, with those of last season in parenthesis, are:—

Marlborough. 240 (245): North and Mid-Canterbury, 7403 (7850); South Canterbury, 1715 (2169): OtagoSouthland, 502 ( 546); Mana-watu-Rangitikei, 2703 (2112): Wairarapa, 186 (112); Hawke’s Bay, 132 (189). The total acreage in 196364 was 11.614 comprising 9839 acres in the South Island and 1775 in the North.

No figures has been completed yet on the old season’s potato surplus, but it is expected to be about 10,000 tons. Potato crops are looking very well and, in common with other farm crops, are expected to yield well.
