CHRISTMAS PARTIES

Early Settlers The Canterbury Pilgrims' and Early Settlers* Associa- . tion held a garden party at A Bishopscourt on Saturday to celebrate Anniversary Day. About 250 members attended and were welcomed by the president of the association. Mr E. D. R. Smith. The Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) spoke on the history of Bishopscourt Specially-invited guests included the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Manning) and Mrs Manning, Mr H. J. Walker. M.P., and Mrs Walker. The Christchurch Garrison Band played background music and a group of girls from St. Margaret’s College sang carols. Garden Club The Somerfield Garden Club invited former members as guests to its recent Christmas party at St Mark's Church nail. The oldest former member present Mrs P. Hand, was presented with a bouquet. Club members wore hats made from flowers and vegetables for a competition. A Christmas cake was cut by the first president Mrs R. L Rickerby, who is now patron. A short sketch was presented by Mesdames D. F. Templeman and N. Allen. Mrs D. C. Wyse sang numbers from “Flower Drum Song,'* accompanied by Mrs R. Buchanan, who also played Christmas carols. ed with carols sung by candlelight by the singing circle. The guild drama circle presented a sketch and the Whirlaway Dancing Club gave an exhibition of square dances.

Specially invited guests included Mrs A. Thomson, a Dominion executive member, Mrs J. Steimetz and Mrs L. Russell, area federation members, Mrs G. A. C. Plumridge, founder of the guild, and the guild's adopted patient from Templeton Hospital and Training Centre. They were welcomed by the president, Mrs G. Pistor. Sclerosis Society The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canterbury held a garden party at the home of Miss Noelene Vale, Hamilton avenue, on Saturday. It was attended by 140 members and guests. They included- about 45 multiple sclerosis patients, many of whom were in wheel chairs. Transport was provided by committee members of the society and Burwood Hospital. The Mayflower Piano Accordion Band played musical items and led carol ringing. Mothers’ Club Bright decorations and a warm welcome from the president of the Gold Star Mothers’ Club (Mrs E. Paterson) to members and visitors set the scene for a Christmas party in Jellicoe Hall recently. Mrs Paterson was assisted by the vice-presidents. Mesdames V. Scott and L. MeKenzse.
