Car In Third Accident
If any midget racing car has earned the title of “accident prone” it must be the powerful VB-60 recently bought by the Christchurch driver, M. Sloan. It was involved in its third accident in as many appearances during the speedcar six-lap handicap at the Templeton Speedway on Saturday night
This time it was the former A ran id driver. W. Clarkson, cow living in Auckland, who was in the cockpit. Sloan, who is still recovering from a fierious crash in the car a fortnight ago, lent the car to Clarkson, who is in Christchurch for the Christmas holidays. Clarkson was lying in a handy position in the middle of the field when J. Tiekink's red midget spun in his P* th - He had no chance of avoiding the spinning car and careered headlong into it. Neither driver was hurt and damage was surprisingly light The bolts on the radius arms of the VS-60 snapped off and
this absorbed much of the shock. They were quickly replaced and the car raced again later in the evening.
Clarkson drove well on his first appearance at Templeton but the limelight was definitely stolen by a local driver. K. Murray. He was in tremendous form io win all three speedcar races on the programme. Including the eight-lap scratch event. In each case he completely dominated the race, winning virtually as he liked. A. Brown, runner-up to M Burt in the New Zealand motorcycle championship last season, showed the way home to the champion In the tour-lap feature scratch race. He led the race from start to finish and was well clear of Burt when he took the chequered flag. The New Zealand international. Ivan Mauger. again demonstrated the form which won him the Englieh provincial league championship. In the final handicap, he burned off a high class %ld te wta from the almost impossible handicap of 1H yards. IJs only rider to provide Mas with any bppositten was bls brother, rirevor. who finished second with a vastly improved style of riding.
