Canterbury Club Wins Two Rowing Trophies

Canterbury Rowing Club won two trophies—the Mazey Shield for novice fours and the Cure Challenge cup for aggregate points in fours and pairs events—at the Kaiapoi Regatta yesterday. The , Lawrence Orchard Memorial Cup went to Union Rowing Club which gained the most points in doubles and singles events. All 16 events on the programme were rowed in spite of heavy rain. Ttaiaru Rowi j Club members were unable to attend and this and other scratchings reduced the number of heats to 18. Crews had a busy time emptying rain water out of their boats before they could

take to the water, which was calm and ideal for rowing. The regatta was run without a hitch except for a break when boats had to clear the river to allow a coastal vessel to berth. Determined Effort One of the most closely contested events was the senior fours. Christ's College, Avon and Union all got away to a good start Christ’s held a brief lead but soon had to give way, and Union and Avon never had more than a length between them all the way up the course. For a while it seemed that Avon would come home first but Union made a determined effort and sneaked

ahead, resisting a further challenge to win by a canvas. In the maiden pairs two Canterbury crews dead-heat-ed for second place behind the Cure dub. Cure had a two lengths lead which it kept to the end. In the junior singles, the Union oarsman was unlucky to catch his sculls in the blades of another crew by the bank, about 50 yards from the line. He recovered but was unable to close the gap on the Cure man who finished well in front Results:— Novice Fours.—Heat i: Canterbury 1, Avon 2. Heat 2: Avon 1, Union 2.
