Six Records Broken

As if responding to the brilliantly warm weather and the small but vociferous crowd, Canterbury swimmers broke si x provincial records at the Centennial Pool on Saturday afternoon.

The carnival's chief feature was the South Island finals of the Speedo teleprinter contest but the "flll-in’’ events drew fields of such quality that Christchurch had its best afternoon's swimming for a long time. Three of the new records were established In teleprinter events. Kathryn Harris (Wharenui) clipped a fifth of a second from the under-14 girls’ breaststroke mark, Catherine Whiting (Spreydon) beat the required time for the under-12 girls’ freestyle by almost two seconds, and Jocelyn Hay (Elmwood) bettered the required time in the un-der-12 girls' breaststroke. Catherine Whiting’s time of Imin 14.6 sec was also better than the under-13 girls' record, but, in the light of a recent decision by the Canterbury Swimming Centre, she will have to wait until next season to be rewarded.

Mark Hindle (Wharenui) fulfilled Ins earlier promiae by chopping o.7sec from G. R. Stringers junior llSyd freeatyle record—a target that hu eluded the leading boy freeatyle swimmers for four years. Hlndle's time of tmln I.3sec confirmed him as the best sprinter in Canterbury. Already the holder of the women's and girls' backstroke records for 110yds, Jennifer Halsev (Wharenui) added the girls' 116 yd butterfly to her collection. She broke Linsey Falk's mark bv 2.lsec. . . Tul Shlpston (Elmwood) broke her girls 1 220 yd medley mark at the Premier Events carnival on December 11 and on Saturday she reduced the record by a further second to 2min 52. S sec. A noticeable Improvement in breaststroke has aided her record-breaking in the medley. Brian Mustchin (Wharenui). hovs' 110 yd butterfly, and Ron Wilson (fpreydonl. boys' 220 yd medlev. both bettered tht standing figures in their respective events, but faster times arc awaiting recognition. i Although he is concentrating on freestvle thia season. Alan Kindred (Wharenui) made light work of a 110 yd backstroke race, and was only o.7sec outside the provincial boys' record. Allison McMillan (Wharenui) was in excellent form, winning the women's 110 yd freestyle in a time only O.gsec outside the Canterbury record she set In the Premier Events carnival the previous week. In the women's

110 yd breaststroke she bettered the Canterbury senior record, but her compatriot from Cambridge, Miss Halsey, has a time l.Osec faster awaiting ratification.
