CANTERBURY SWIMMERS TAKE EIGHT TITLES

Results in the Speedo Teleprinter carnival on Saturday afternoon indicated that a revival in Canterbury’s swimming fortunes is likely.

In a meeting that resembled a national age group championship, Canterbury won eight of the 24 titles at stake and produced the most successful competitor —Brent Lewis, who scored a hat-trick in the under-10 boy’s events.

The carnival was run simultaneously at the Centennial Tool and in pools in Wellington and Auckland, with the results being transmitted by teleprinter to Wellington, where the best three times In each event were computed.! The national results were back at the individual pools within live minutes of the sending of the regional times. Swimmers from all but three of New Zealand's 16 centres took part in the competition. On a points basis, Canterbury was a close second to Auckland, with the other centres well behind. Brent Lewis established himself as the best boy of his age in the country in breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, while Catherine Whiting scored clear-cut wins in the under-12 girls’ freestyle and backstroke. Canterbury's other winners were Jaynie Parkhouse (under-10 girls’ freestyle), Michael Lee (under-10 boys’ freestyle) and Mark Lewis (under-12 boys’ backstroke). Mark and Brent Lewis are brothers: Jaynie Parkhouse is the daughter of Mr V. T. Parkhouse. professional coach at the Wharenui pool. Three boys in other centres each won two titles. Nigel Hope < Wanganui), freestyle and backstroke. and Frank Hill ■ Taranaki), breaststroke and butterfly, dominated the under-

14 boys* section, and Murray Hall (Auckland), a winner In the restricted teleprinter meeting last year, won the under-12 boys' freestyle and butterfly events.

Canterbury displayed exceptional strength in the under-10 boys' group, winning every event. Brent Lewis was far superior to any of his rivals in three strokes, and Michael Lee and Mark Harding gained first and third places in the freestyle event. Lee was also second to Lewis in backstroke.

There was all-round ability, too. in Canterbury’s competitors in the under-12 girls’ section. Catherine Whiting had her two wins Felicity Bunt improved greatly to gain a third in freestyle, and Jocelyn Hay was beaten by only o.7sec for first place in both the butterfly and breaststroke events. tn the ranks of the under-14 swimmers, the national champions of tomorrow. Canterbury's challenge was submerged by outstanding North Island competitors. The Auckland girls. Glenda Stirling (backstroke) and philllppa Bunce (butterfly), returned good times, and Hope. Hill and Toni Hazael (Wellington). a girl freestyler. showed definite promise. Kathryn Harris, a fine new prospect in girls’ breaststroke In Canterbury, performed remarkably well In her field. She was beaten for first place by only O.Ssec by Jane Findlay (Bay of ’Plenty), one of the swimmers chosen by the national selectors tor the premier events carnivals the previous week. Miss Harris beat Donna Mcßae (Bay of Plenty), another of the premier events competitors. Another Canterbury under-14 breaststroke swimmer. Max King, swam well to gain third place in this event. The most remarkable effort in the under-14 section was that of Robert Beddie (Auckland) in being placed in all four races. He was second In freestyle and breaststroke, second equal in backstroke, and third tn butterfly Points were- Auckland 41). Canterbury 38. Taranaki 16*, Wellington 12.
