INCREASE IN RETAIL TRADE TURNOVER
(N.Z. Press Astoeiation) WELLINGTON, Nov. 21. New Zealanders bought more during the three months ended September 30 than during the corresponding quarter in 1964, reports the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). Retail trade turnover during the three months increased by 7.8 per cent, with highest increases shown by hardware (13.7 per cent), grocers (11.6 per cent) and others (10.0 per cent). Furniture and soft furnishings are next with an increase of 9.8 per cent, other apparel 9.5 per cent, other food and drink 6.9 per cent, chemist’s goods, 6.8 per cent, meat and poultry, 5.5 per cent, general goods, 3.7 per cent and footwear 2.9 per cent. Household appliances, including television, fell by 4.9 per cent.
When the quarterly figures
of total turn-over are corrected for seasonal fluctuations, the movement between the quarters ended June 30 and September 30 represents an increase of 1.2 per cent With further adjustments to remove the effect of price and population changes as well as seasonal fluctuations the value of the turn-over per head between the June and September quarters Increased by 0.5 per cent.
