Wintry Conditions Mar 80th Waimate Show

Wintry conditions marred the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s 80th show on Saturday. Cold, threatening weather affected attendance—although the drop in gate takings was less than might have been expected—and several brief showers accompanied by hail made conditions unpleasant in the afternoon.

“But it could have been worse,” said the president of the association (Mr I. H. C. McNeill). “The gate, at £2lO, was only £4O down on last year. It was just unfortunate that the cold weather kept many people away. The committee was disappointed, aftei’ working hard before the show.”

Mr McNeill expressed the association's thanks to the judges, marshals and stewards for their work under trying conditions. Near-record entries of stock came forward in good condition, and the quality and standard generally was the subject of favourable comment by the judges. Many of the sheep and light horse classes in particular were of a particularly high standard. These sections were contested by a substantial proportion of exhibitors whose stock had taken prizes at recent shows at Oamaru and Timaru, and even the Canterbury Metropolitan Show, and competition in many classes was strong. Thirty-two hunters contested the Waimate Show jumping championship, which was won by Miss M. Ross’s and I. M. Ritchie’s Limelight. The pony section also was keenly contested by large classes. While the sheep (401 entries) and light horses and ponies (180) comprised the largest sections of the show, the number of cattle exhibited has increased over the last few years, mainly as a result of growing interest in the production of beef. The entry of cattle on Saturday totalled 72 beasts, and as a result of the improvement in the quality of their sires by

local breeders, the standard of the beef cattle was high. Awards were as follows: SHEEP Southdown (Judge: Mr D. C. McMillan, Irwell) Ram, over 18 months: J. C. Medlicott and Son 1. Shorn: J C.
