ATHLETICS Junior Women’s High Jump Record Broken

Miss L. Anderson (Technical) became the first New Zealand woman high jumper to clear five feet in under-age competition at Rugby Park on Saturday.

She broke her own records, set a fortnight ago, in the under-15 and under-17 events with a jump of sft OJin and then failed in an attempt to clear sft 2in. Her record jump would have placed her third at the national women’s championships last year. Miss Anderson, aged 14. cleared 4ft lOin with ease and then watched her only remaining rival. Miss C. Cottrell (Technical), fail to clear 4ft Ilin. She resumed jumping at sft and failed with her first two: but then cleared the bar for the new record. The good jumping of Miss Cottrell was obscured by the record but this was her first inter-ciub meeting and her height of 4ft lOins was only a quarter of an inch below the then record.

Cold conditions and strong gusts of wind hindered most athletes in their efforts to gain selection for the Canterbury team to compete in the triangular tournament.

D. W. Mackenzie ( University) was most impressive in the senior men's sprints, winning the 100yds in the good time of lO.lsec without any wind assistance. He was never extended to win the 440yds in 50.6 sec.

The senior men's javelin competition received a fillip with the appearance of M. Stewart (Waimate). He had a best throw of 205 ft Otin, eight feet further than D. C. Leary (Kiccarton). Miss D. Carteris (Technical) did well to hurl the discus 146 ft o)in as the throwing circle was a little slippery after the rain. Abbreviations used in the following results are:—Anglican (Ang.).
