PLANS FOR GALLERY

Occupation In March, 1967 Occupation of its new art gallery at 66 Gloucester street is planned for March, 1967, by the Canterbury Society of Arts. Announcing this in his an nual report, the president of the society (Mr S. E. Mair) says that the opening of the gallery will mark the most important development since the society was founded, and it is hoped that the gallery will allow the society to extend its activities in many ways. The time may have arrived, Mr Mair says, for the annual autumn exhibition to be altered to improve it. Suggestions have been made which the council will consider, but action may have to be deferred until the new gallery is occupied. The report says that with the death of Mr Heathcote Helmore, the society lost one of its greatest supporters, whose record of almost continuous service to the society went back more than 50 years. It is hoped to hold an exhibition of his work as an architect with the next annual exhibition.
