PUBLICITY FOR N.Z.

Use Of Maoris Defended The use of Maoris in overseas publicity was a perfectly acceptable and legitimate oractice, the Minister in Charge of Tourism (Mr Eyre) said at Franz Josef last evening. He was surprised that so much uninformed cornment was appearing in newspapers, Mr Eyre said. “Our mountains. our ! thermal activity, our dramatic (seascapes and coastal scenery, our pastures, even our friendliness, are all used in overseas publicity, and no picture of New Zealand would be ; complete without the inclusion i of the Maori theme.” he said. “As far as people gaining the imp-ession that New Zealand is inhabited by native people in grass skirts is concerned, I discount this entirely. It. is no more a valid argument than it is to expect Honolulu to be populated by attractive hula girls,” he said.

Annual Match—The Canterbury Fire and Accident Underwriters’ Association held its annual golf match at Russley on Wednesday. The winner of the Underwriters’ Cup was Mr E. W. Burtt.
