TOURIST SPENDING

‘Blessing’ To S.I. (N.Z. Press Association) HOKITIKA, Nov. 4. Tourism would become one of New Zealand’s most lucrative industries and could be a heaven-sent blessing to many South Island towns and cities if they planned and catered for it, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said at the South Island Local Bodies’ Association’s meeting at Hokitika today. , It was also as well to remember that New Zealanders were great travellers, especially within their own country, he said. “I found it difficult to obtain exact percentage figures, but I’m told that about 60 per cent of our population takes a holiday away from home each year. “The latest figures from the Tourist Department show that New Zealand travellers are spending in this country, £3O million a year,” Mr Allen said.

“They say money talks," he said. “This kind of money is simply screaming—£82.000 a day is spent by New Zealanders touring their own country. “Combine this figure with the overseas visitors’ figure of £lO million and we have the impressive total of £4O million a year spent by travellers throughout, the country.”
