Birds On Runway
(N Z. Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, Oct. 19.
Birds prevented an N.A.C. Fokker Friendship from taking off from the Invercargill Airport runway early this morning.
The plane, carrying 23 passengers. was on the scheduled 7.15 a.m. N.A.C. flight to Dunedin and Wellington. The plane had gone about 500 feet down the runway when a flock of birds flew across in front of the aircraft. It turned around and went back to take off again. The birds continued to hover across the runway, but they were dispersed by an airport vehicle motoring up and down the runway.
The plane's second attempt at taking off went unhindered. The plane was delayed for five minutes while the runway was cleared.
A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Department said this type of thing happened frequently at the Invercargill Airport.
