Marist Club Pitch ‘Below Standard’
If the Marist Club wished to remain in the second A grade or reach senior status, it will have to improve its pitch at Linwood Park, said Mr A. G. Duckman ton at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association last evening.
Mr Duckmanton said that the Marist Club and the City Council should get together to try and improve the pitch. “At present it is hardly up to second A standard,” he added.
Mr M. C. Stonyer (Marjst) said that it was not intended to use the pitch last Saturday because there had not been a good growth of grass. He said that Mr Duckmanton’s comments were rather unfortunate. “We have put a lot of work into the ground) and last year it cost us £100) to have a pitch resown. “We never seem to get much co-operation from the City Council. For example, the groundsmen do not like us rolling the pitches,” said I Mr Stonyer.
Mr Duckmanton said he had not meant his remarks to be taken as criticism of the Marist club but if it wanted to reach senior grading it could find that a poor pitch would be a severe handicap. Mr Taylor Appointed
A recommendation from Mr D. J. Elder, chairman of the coaching committee, that Mr A. R. Taylor be appointed examiner of Training College students for coaching diplomas was approved, Mr Elder said that the secondary schools coaching
group was proving very successful.
“The representative selector (Mr W. MeD. Anderson) is most impressed with the standard of the players attending the net,” he added.
