Devastation Shows Has Held Form
“The Press” Special Service OTAKI.
Devastation showed with a steady gallop over six furlongs at Otaki yesterday that he had held his form and would be one of the major dangers in the Wellington Guineas. Work was done in the middle of the trial grass and on the two year-old track.
Marconi and Devastation covered an easy five furlongs in Imin 20sec, the last three in 40 4-ssec.
Devastation was galloping boldly under a strong hold at the finish, half a length ahead of Marconi. Devastation has held his form well since winning the Hawke’s Bay Guineas and against the relatively poor guineas field at Wellington he appears the hardest to beat. Marconi has only one win before entering open class and on his work and a good fifth over a mi'le last start at Waipukurau he appears to have a good chance of gaining this in the Heretaunga Hack Handicap at Trentham.
Cantus was extremely impressive when beating His Grace over five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec and the final three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Cantus came away from his companion at the finish. Cantus is in the Wainui Handicap at Trentham and at this stage of his campaign he looks well suited by the mile event.
His Grace is in the Shorts Handicap but on his work yesterday he would have to improve. He finished a disappointing nineth at Waipukurau last start.
Best in Sprint Misjudge was particularly impressive w’hen covering the last six furlongs of his work in Imin 18 3-ssec, the final half-mile in 52 3-ssec. Misjudge started at
the mile and a quarter and was working at a strong pace throughout the trial. He is in the Heretaunga Hack Handicap al Trentham.
Acapulco could not have been more impressive than when covering five furlongs in Imin 3 3-ssec the final three in 39 4-5 sec. Acapulco finished a good second over a sprint at Otaki last Start and this indicated that he was approaching form. He is a long strider and should be suited by the long Trentham straight. He is in the Wainui Handicap.
