Indonesians Capture Leader Of Uprising

(N.Z, Press Association—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, October 12. The Indonesian Army ran to ground its most prized quarry today with the capture of Lieutenant-Colonel Untung, leader of the “September 30 Movement” which staged the abortive coup against President Sukarno early on October 1.

The army-controlled Radio Djakarta reported that Colonel Untung was arrested by army forces in the Tegal region of central Djakarta.

The capture was made with the asistance of the “people,” according to Radio Djakarta. The capture ran side by side with growing Army and public demands to oust all Communists from Indonesia.

A half a million screaming Indonesians held a giant rally in the Sumatran city of Medan today and demanded that Indonesia’s official Communist Party (P.K.1.) be banned, Radio Medan reported in a broadcast heard in Kuala Lumpur. The broadcast said the crowd waved antiCommunist posters and “became wild and could not be controlled.” Djakarta Radio said that Colonel Untung—a battalion commander in the Presidential body guard—was trying to escape to Semarang, i bigger coastal town about 10 miles to the east of Tegal, when he was captured. Quoting General Ibnu Subroto, head of the Army Information Service, the radio said Colonel Untung had left behind two of his men, who were later captured about 10 miles away. Another Capture There has been no firm news of the remnants of Colonel Untung’s movement for several days, but Radio Djakarta said today that the Army had captured another

leader of the counterrevolutionary council. He was identified as Colonel A. Latif. The radio said he was taken prisoner on October 9 near Djakarta and was shot in both legs when he tried to put up a fight. Earlier radio reports said that in Sumatra, too, Army units were “hard on the heels” of rebels. Troops had stepped up their operations against Communist rebels in the island and had been ordered to break up and disarm armed Communist bands, the reports added. General Call Monitors also quoted the military authorities as calling on all branches of the mass organisation. National Front, to deal with members who took part in the September 30 rising. According to Radio Djakarta, the armed forces daily, “Harian Angkatan Bersendjata,” said there must be no half measures in stamping out the “September 30 Movement” and safeguarding President Sukarno. The Malaysian radio quoted Radio Djakarta as saying that the Communistinfiltrated, National Front, a widespread semi-Government organisation that covers all walks of life in Indonesia, has been ordered by the Army command to purge its ranks of members involved in the coup attempt. 1000 Arrests The Army, which controls Djakarta and its suburbs, has launched a vigorous anti-Com-munist campaign, charging that Communists took part in the coup attempt and were involved in the brutal slaying of six Army generals during the early stages of the turmoil. The arrests in the Djakarta area alone were estimated at about 1000, new dispatches from the Indonesian capital said earlier.
